Welcome to Topsail Island, the beach as it used to be ... and more. It
is 26 miles long, and about four blocks wide at its widest. There
are places where you can look out at the ocean on one side of your
dwelling, and the sound or Intracoastal Waterway on the other side.
Egrets and herons high step through the marsh grasses, and dolphins
splash as they race along the incoming waves. Overhead, pelicans and
seagulls float on the ocean breeze. No roller coasters and only one
noisy bar. A swing bridge gets you on the island at its midsection,
and a very high bridge gives you breath-taking views of the north
end.
 Topsail (pronounced top.sull) is a wonderful place for your primary
home, second home or investment property. From south to north, you
have three separate and distinct communities: Topsail Beach, Surf
City, and North Topsail Beach.
Most of the business places are in Surf City, while Topsail Beach
has a small business district. North Topsail Beach has virtually no
commercial area.
If good dining is important to you, there are several fine
restaurants available at dusk.
They include Latitude 34 on the sound
in Topsail Beach, and Indigo Marsh, a chop house, and Beauchaine's,
both in Surf City. Fire destroyed another fine dining place in Daddy
Mac's, the best of oceanfront restaurants, and which is being
rebuilt in Surf City.
Nice weather prevails 9 months a year, and the winters offer brisk
walks on the beach. A typical winter day would find temperatures
ranging from about
35 degrees to 55 degrees. In the summer, ocean breezes keep it 10
degrees cooler than the mainland 30 miles away.
Housing choices range from the reasonable to the extravagant; from
mobile homes to 6-bedroom oceanfronts. Boaters will delight in the
choices available, from deep sea fishing to high speed bounces down
the Intracoastal Waterway. Special pleasure can be found in Topsail
Sound, which fronts the southern portion of the island on the west
and which resembles a lake with tides.
